I started offering reduced-rate seats years ago because I saw too many people with a genuine calling to this work get stopped by the cost of training. Birth work has historically been undervalued, and the people drawn to it often aren’t starting from a place of financial privilege. I wanted to remove that barrier for at least a few students in every class.

These seats are specifically for people who intend to work as doulas and serve families in their communities. That’s the goal: more doulas helping more families.

Over time, I’ve added clearer guidelines around who these seats are for. Many midwifery programs require students to get doula certification as part of their training, but most of those students won’t go on to work as doulas. They’re focused on becoming midwives. That’s a wonderful path, but it’s not what these seats are designed to support. The same goes for nurses, postpartum doulas, and other birth professionals adding a credential. If you’re not brand new and birth doula work isn’t going to be your focus, these seats aren’t the right fit.

The policies below exist to keep this program available for people who will use this training to actually do doula work.

What’s Available

For each training, I offer two reduced-rate seats for people experiencing financial hardship who plan to enter doula work as brand-new doulas.

Equity Seat: For BIPOC and LGBTQ+ individuals who are also experiencing financial hardship.

Community Hardship Seat: For anyone experiencing financial hardship who does not qualify for the Equity Seat.

These seats are offered on the honor system and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Once a seat is claimed for a training date, it’s gone.

Before You Register: Please Read Carefully

Reduced-rate seats exist for one purpose: to make doula training accessible to people who genuinely cannot afford it and who will use this training to serve families as a doula.

These seats are NOT for:

  • Midwifery students fulfilling a program requirement
  • Postpartum doulas adding birth doula certification
  • Nurses, CNMs, or other birth professionals cross-certifying
  • Anyone already working in the birth field in another capacity
  • Anyone who could comfortably pay full price but prefers to pay less

If any of these describe you, please register at the regular rate or use a payment plan. Reduced-rate seats taken by people who don’t truly need them mean someone else goes without.

Additional terms for reduced-rate registrations:

  • No transfers. If you need to move to a different training date, you’ll pay the difference between your reduced rate and the current regular price.
  • No missed days. If you miss any portion of the training, you’ll pay the makeup class fee like any other student.
  • No exceptions. If I discover that information provided during registration was misrepresented, your reduced rate will be revoked and a certificate will not be issued.

Other Ways to Make Training Affordable

If reduced-rate seats aren’t available or you don’t qualify, you still have options.

Payment Plans

I offer flexible payment plans at no extra cost. Register up to 6 months early and pay as little as $108/month. [Learn more about payment plans]

MYCAA Funding for Military Spouses

If you’re the spouse of an active-duty service member, you may qualify for up to $4,000 in funding through the MYCAA program. My training is MYCAA-approved. [Learn more about MYCAA]

More Funding Ideas

From grants to employer reimbursement to community crowdfunding, there are many creative ways to fund your training. [Read: Ways to Fund Your Doula Training]

Still Unsure?

Ask yourself honestly: “Do I genuinely need this, or would I just prefer to pay less?” If it’s the latter, a payment plan is the right choice.
